Queensland Labor has tried to call on the LNP to urgently increase the patient travel subsidy scheme (PTSS) to help sick Queenslanders struggling under the affordability crisis.
But the LNP’s Leader of the House, Christian Rowan, a trained medical doctor, complained Labor’s calls could not be debated because it would cost the Crisafulli Government money.
It meant, due to the advocacy of Christian Rowan, the LNP conveniently did not have to debate urgently increasing the PTSS, including raising the overnight allowance and doubling of the private motor vehicle subsidy amount.
It’s been reported Queenslanders are choosing between healthcare and fuel bills because of the affordability bite.
The Crisafulli Government would rather ignore the issue, than make a difference to Queenslanders who are struggling now.
Meanwhile, the Crisafulli Government is expected to make an additional $2 billion in royalties as a result of increased coal and gas prices.
Quotes attributable to Shadow Health Minister Mark Bailey:
“If the Crisafulli Government was serious about helping Queenslanders, a trained medical doctor wouldn’t be pouring over the parliamentary handbook for a political gotcha – he’d be putting up his hand to help struggling Queenslanders.
“The Premier could immediately increase the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme for patients who are struggling today.
“Sick Queenslanders are choosing to delay their care because the cost to travel and stay in Brisbane is just too high.
“Sick Queenslanders shouldn’t have to wait until the budget when they are in pain and need care, now.
“Instead of taking immediate action, a trained medical doctor is finding excuses and making arguments for his Premier not to act.”
